1896-12-21 Bob Armstrong w co 19 (20) Charley Strong, Broadway AC, Brooklyn, NYC, New York, USA. With these two reckoned to be among the top flight, they were matched to contest the vacant ‘black’ title in a fight that came about due to the leading coloured fighters of the day being sidelined for championship matches. The fight itself saw Strong fighting gamely despite being outclassed by Armstrong, who used his greater reach to good effect, and in the 19th he was sent to the boards by a left swing to the head and counted out.
