1897-01-04 (104lbs) Ike Cohen w rsc 9 (20) Joe Gates, Gymnastic Club, Stalybridge, England. Referee: T. P. Bellhouse. Billed for the vacant English 104lbs title, Gates was a late substitute for Jack Pearson, when the latter discovered he could no longer make the weight shortly before the contest was due to take place and thus forfeited his claim. Looking out of condition, Gates seemed unsteady on his legs in the fifth and in both the seventh and eighth he was saved by the bell after being dropped. It was now apparent that Gates had nothing left and, in the ninth, he was rescued by the referee when being hit at will.
