1897-01-11 (122lbs) Dave Wallace w rsc 19 (20) Alf Wright, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Contested at 122lbs, having fallen through the ropes in the first round Wright (122) then sustained an eye injury in the second following a clash of heads before dropping Wallace twice in that session. However, Wright had weakened by the halfway stage and Wallace began to get on top. The end was in sight when Wright hurt himself when falling after missing with a swing in the 16th, being extremely groggy on being put through the ropes in the 18th. Following that, the 19th saw Wright, trapped on the ropes, taking much punishment before being put down, and although he vainly tried to get up the referee stopped the fight.
Despite a lack of title billing, Wallace claimed the English 122 and 124lb championships on the result.
