1897-01-25 (116lbs) Pedlar Palmer w rsc 14 (20) Ernie Stanton, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Because Palmer was experiencing difficulty in making 116lbs the fight was made at 118lbs, but with both men inside 116lbs on the night it was accepted as involving his title claim at that weight. Once again, Palmer (115½) put on a brilliant display and never looked likely to lose against the game Stanton (116), who found that his best was not good enough against a fighter of the highest class. Right from the onset Stanton began to lose ground and after six rounds his deliveries were falling short of the target. However, never one to give in, Stanton kept going as best he could but by the 14th it was a hopeless cause and after Palmer had dropped him twice from solid blows to the jaw the referee stepped in.
A few months later, in mid April, it was confirmed in the Sporting Life that Palmer would be moving up in weight.
