1897-02-24 (146lbs) Tommy Ryan w co 9 (20) Tom Tracey, Empire AC, The Alhambra, Syracuse, New York, USA. Referee: Yank Sullivan. Although recorded in the Ring Record Book as involving the championship, Luckett Davis, the noted record compiler, unearthed the following extract from the Philadelphia Item. According to the Item the match was a catchweight affair that was restricted to 145lbs, with Tracey (139) several pounds lighter than his opponent. Had the Australian won he would almost certainly have claimed the ‘popular’ 142lbs title. The fight itself saw Tracey being put down several times when receiving an awful drubbing at the hands of Ryan (144) before being counted out.
