1897-03-01 (110lbs) Jimmy Barry w pts 20 Jack Ward, American SC, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: Johnny White. After making a slow start when trying to draw his opponent on to punches, Barry opened up in the fifth with solid blows from both hands. However, Ward did not hang around to become a punch bag and was soon using every inch of the ring. All the hitting came from Barry, when he could get into firing distance, while Ward contented himself in sprinting out of harm's way at every opportunity. At the final bell there could only be one winner in what had been a mainly boring affair. This was not a billed title fight, but with both men inside 110lbs Barry extended his title claim at the weight.
