1897-03-06 Bob Armstrong w rsc 6 (15) Joe Butler, Broadway AC, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: Dick Roche. Recognised as a contest for the ‘black’ title. Outweighed by at least 20 pounds, Butler was unable to get close enough to Armstrong, who jabbed at will, and he was dropped in the second round by a straight left. Bleeding badly, by the sixth Butler was being battered at will by Armstrong and was ready to drop when the referee called it off with 45 seconds on the clock.

The following day, according to some records Armstrong was supposed to have lost a six-round points decision in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Frank Childs, another coloured fighter, but I have yet to find notification of that fight taking place.
