1897-03-08 (142lbs) Bill Whatley w co 4 (10) Tom Williams, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Limited to ten rounds at 142lbs, the opening two sessions were well contested before Whatley (140) found that Williams was uncomfortable under pressure to the body in the third. Having landed heavily in that region, Whatley put Williams (142) down with a solid crack on the jaw before lefts and rights to the body had the latter down twice more. Saved by the bell, Williams came back strongly in the fourth, but was soon in difficulty before a right under the heart saw him counted out. For Whatley it was an impressive victory, but despite claiming the English title at the weight he was unable to secure it.
