1897-03-17 (145lbs) George Green w rtd 11 (finish) Mysterious Billy Smith, Racetrack Arena, Carson City, Nevada, USA. Referee: Malachy Hogan. With Tommy Ryan inexorably moving towards the full middleweight ranks according to the Police Gazette, and despite the absence of individual weights, Green claimed the welter title following his victory over Smith at 145lbs. Refraining from using his left arm which had been broken three months earlier, Smith had by far the worst of it when only using the right and was an open target for Green’s left jab. With Smith looking to get to close quarters continuously the referee had his hands full breaking the men up and there was much fouling. At the end of the 11th round Smith went back to his corner and retired himself, saying that his left arm had been broken again in the fourth and that it was hopeless for him to carry on any longer.
