1897-03-18 (114lbs) Harry Ware w rsc 16 (20) Harry Paul, Excelsior Baths, Bethnal Green, London, England. The fight did not really get going until Ware (114) made Paul (114) wince after landing a series of straight punches on the mark in the fifth round. Fighting back well, Paul virtually held his own up until the 12th before becoming receiver-general, as was the saying of the day, and beginning to fall behind on the cards. Following a hot rally in the 16th, Ware dropped Paul with a right to the jaw and although the latter got to his feet at ‘eight’ the referee recognised that he was all in and stopped the fight.

Despite a lack of title billing, with both men inside 114lbs Ware claimed the championship at the weight.
