1897-03-24 (122lbs) George Dixon w pts 25 Frank Erne, Broadway AC, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: Dick Roche. In a match made at 122lbs, Erne, who weighed in at a whopping 130¼lbs, was forced to pay forfeit as well as losing his claim at the weight to Dixon. Inside 122lbs, Dixon successfully reclaimed the title as he forced the lethargic Erne on to the back foot to win in easy fashion.

Meanwhile, in England, on 27 March 1897, Willie Smith challenged Ben Jordan, who was continually stating his right to the English 122lbs title, and within a week or so Smith was claiming to be the rightful English champion.
