1897-03-24 (122lbs) George Dixon w pts 25 Frank Erne, Broadway AC, Brooklyn, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: Dick Roche. In a match made at 122lbs, Erne weighed in at a whopping 130¼lbs and was forced to pay forfeit as well as losing his claim at the weight to Dixon. Inside 122lbs, Dixon successfully reclaimed the title as he forced the lethargic Erne on to the back foot to win in easy fashion. Meanwhile, in England, Willie Smith challenged Ben Jordan, who was also claiming the English 122lbs title, on 27 March 1897 and within a week or so Smith was claiming to be the rightful English champion.
