1897-04-12 (92lbs) Curly Wood w pts 20 Billy Ray, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Made at 91lbs, give or take a pound, Wood (91½) made the better start, beginning to forge ahead as his left hand found Ray (91½) time and again early on before the latter dropped him twice in the fifth. The next five rounds were give-and-take affairs with Wood groggy at times prior to fighting back and adding to his points tally. Although Ray, working the body strongly, forced Wood down twice in the 16th he was unable to keep him there, and the Woolwich man continued to lead from the outside to take the decision by a narrow margin. On the result, Wood claimed the English 92lbs title.
