1897-05-04 (122lbs) Solly Smith w pts 25 Martin Flaherty, Broadway AC, Brooklyn, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: Dick Roche. Made at 122lbs, Smith claimed the American title at the weight on winning, while Flaherty ceased to be recognised at 126lbs. Having failed to make the weight at the allotted time, Flaherty, half a pound over, refused to pay the forfeit but the fight went ahead with the promoters settling up. For the most part Flaherty seemed more intent on blocking than leading, especially after being cut over the left eye in the eighth and being knocked down in the 15th, but when he did attack he looked dangerous.
