1897-05-26 (145lbs) [[George Green]] w rsc 15 (20) [[Charlie McKeever]], National AC, Woodward’s Pavilion, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Hiram Cook. With Green claiming the 145lbs title, the ''San Francisco Chronicle'' reported this to be a great welter contest. The end came in the 15th round after both men were weary from their exertions and McKeever, having taken terrific punishment to the body, fell down in a corner immediately prior to the contest being stopped by the referee. Green, who set a terrific pace, had cut McKeever over the left eye in the second and had forced the fight throughout, while the latter relied on countering. Despite the omission of weights and the fact that Green looked to be several pounds heavier than McKeever, who was a natural welter at the time, the billing suggests that Green’s title claim was on the line in this one.
