1897-05-31 (142/144lbs) Tom Causer w disq 7 (20) Dick Burge, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Billed for the English 144lbs title, by the sixth round Burge (142), who appeared to be in control at that stage, was making the body his target. Cautioned for a low blow after Causer (140) had knocked his punch down, an angry Burge was caught off guard and took a few shots that he should have avoided. With the Newcastle man well on top in the seventh Causer twice pushed blows below the belt, blatantly jumping up on the second occasion to allow the blow to go low, an action that saw Burge disqualified immediately. Most fight reports stated that Causer was never in with a chance, while rumours abounded that it had been a fix in order to drum up a return bout. Meantime, Pat Daly challenged Tom Causer to settle the 142 and 144lb championships and was followed by Jim Styles in July.
