1897-06-07 (116lbs) Will Curley w pts 20 Tom Turner, Standard Theatre, Gateshead, England. Referee: Edward Humphreys. Billed for the English 116lbs title, in what was an excellent contest Curley proved to be the better all-round fighter of the two, while Turner concentrated on the body. The main feature of the contest was Curley’s accuracy and use of straight punches and in the eighth round a tremendous onslaught almost had Turner down and out. While there were no knockdowns there were plenty of hard hits and Turner showed his remarkable resilience in taking all that Curley could throw at him.
Afterwards, Curley challenged the world while Jim Williams stated that he would meet either Curley or George Corfield to decide the championship. However, Curley, who was quickly growing into a featherweight, had moved on by 1898.
