1897-06-08 (102lbs) Ernie Brady w disq 7 (20) Jack Maloney, Standard Theatre, Gateshead, England. Referee: J. H. Hornsby. Made at 102lbs for the English title, There was never a great deal of fighting done in this one, despite Brady (101½) occasionally landing good punches from both hands, as Maloney (102) seemed more intent on negating his rival’s work. As clinch followed clinch, the referee was getting more frustrated and in the seventh after the Westminster man had twice wrestled Brady to the boards he awarded the fight to the latter. The official line was that Maloney had been disqualified for consistently hugging and tripping, and failing to obey the referee’s commands.
