1897-07-23 (128lbs) George Dixon drew 20 Dal Hawkins, Mechanics’ Pavilion, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Jack Welch. The Philadelphia Item reported this to be a battle for championship honours and the men made a fast start, with Dixon (124) the aggressor for the first ten rounds before the stronger and bigger Hawkins (128) came on during the remainder of the contest. There were no knockdowns, despite heavy punches going in, and although Hawkins’ power posed a problem for Dixon at times he was able to block the majority.

From thereon, Hawkins boxed in the lightweight ranks and was no longer considered at 128lbs.
