1897-08-20 (124lbs) Solly Smith w co 7 (20) Johnny Griffin, Woodward’s Pavilion, San Francisco, California, USA. With both men inside 124lbs it was Smith’s fight from start to finish, and doing all the leading he dropped Griffin and split his right eye open in the third round. Relatively quiet from the fourth to the seventh, two minutes into the session Smith opened up until a right to the jaw put Griffin out for the count.

By winning, Smith successfully defended his American title claim at the weight before moving on.
