1897-08-26 (145lbs) Joe Walcott w co 18 (20) George Green, Woodward’s Pavilion, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Jack Welch. Although no weights were given, the Police Gazette reported this as ‘practically’ a championship affair, while the San Francisco Chronicle claimed that the contest was being treated with all the consideration due to a title fight and labelled it as a battle for welter honours. Green shipped a tremendous amount of punishment, being down three times in the sixth, three times in the tenth and once in the 18th before being knocked out from a series of heavy jolts to the jaw. By his victory, Walcott took over Green’s 145lbs title claim.
