1897-09-27 (123/124lbs) Bill Brierley w pts 20 Jim Barry, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. With both men inside 123lbs, Brierley (121) added to his English 124lbs title claim after his win over Barry (121). Right from the start Brierley was a revelation, picking up round after round and cutting Barry over both eyes in the process. While Brierley proved he had a punch he failed to knock Barry down and it was clear that the latter had been playing a waiting game, hoping that his rival would blow up at some stage. When that did not happen it was all over for Barry and the points award went to Brierley by a big margin.
