Line 1: Line 1:
1897-09-27 (135lbs) Bobby Dobbs w pts 20 Joe Gans, Greenpoint AC, Brooklyn, NYC, New York, USA. Contested at 135lbs and billed for the coloured title according to the Brooklyn Eagle, Dobbs had by far the better of the fighting with Gans unable to reach him. Following a slow start Dobbs began to corner his opponent, punishing him severely to the body with both hands, and this was the latter’s tactic throughout the fight as Gans did little of note. The verdict was a formality. It was reported not long afterwards that Dobbs was challenging Kid Lavigne to decide the 133lbs American championship, but unable to make the match, for whatever reason, he left for England ten fights later.
