1897-10-04 (120lbs) Solly Smith w pts 20 George Dixon, Woodward’s Pavilion, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: George Green. Billed for the world title, both men were inside 120lbs and although there were no knockdowns there was plenty of hard hitting. It was noticeable how much Smith had improved since their last contest, especially on the inside and showing remarkable coolness when under pressure. The feature of the contest was Smith’s blocking and ducking of Dixon’s leads and his ability to keep out of harm's way while scoring points himself.
