1897-10-04 (120lbs) Solly Smith w pts 20 George Dixon, Woodward’s Pavilion, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: George Green. Billed for the world title, with both men inside 120lbs, although there were no knockdowns there was plenty of hard hitting. It was noticeable how much Smith had improved since their last contest, especially on the inside as well as showing remarkable coolness when under pressure. The feature of the contest was Smith’s blocking and ducking of Dixon’s leads that matched his ability to keep out of harm's way while scoring points himself.
