1897-10-18 (118lbs) Pedlar Palmer w pts 20 Dave Sullivan, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Articled at 116lbs, give or take two pounds, prior to the contest Palmer had been informed by the NSC that unless he and his opponents weighed in below 116lbs in future they would insist on matching him against Ben Jordan, who they recognised as champion between 118 and 120lbs.
While there were no knockdowns it was still a close and entertaining fight, with Palmer (115½), showing all of his old trickery and Sullivan (118) looking to settle the fight with one punch. Several times Sullivan swung his right for the jaw only to find Palmer missing and had most of his joy when going to the body, while the latter more often than not found the mark with lightning left jabs.
