1897-10-25 (120lbs) Harry Williams w co 8 (20) Fred Delaney, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Contested at 120lbs, Williams (116½), who looked to be the far bigger man, was put down in the first round by a right to the neck before quickly getting back in to the fight. In the fifth, Delaney (116) was twice cautioned for low blows after Williams pretended to be in pain, but in the seventh after rising from a knockdown he was again warned by the referee, this time for holding. Williams was now well ahead, and in the eighth he dropped Delaney for the full count after a left to the body that had appeared to go low was deemed to be fair.
Regardless of a lack of championship billing, with both men inside the weight Williams claimed the title on the result.
