1897-10-29 (135lbs) Kid Lavigne w rtd 12 (20) Joe Walcott, Occidental Club, Mechanics’ Pavilion, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Ed Graney. In a return match, this time at 135lbs, Walcott struggled to make the weight and although inside on the night he had weakened himself considerably. Setting a terrific pace Lavigne’s body blows sapped Walcott’s strength and in the ninth round he suffered muscular cramps. Wishing to organise a draw at the end of the 11th, having been refused Walcott came out for the 12th before retiring himself at the end of the session.

With Walcott recognised as the welter champion in California at the time, his claims at 140, 142 and 145lbs passed to the winner.
