1897-10-29 (135lbs) Kid Lavigne w rtd 12 (20) Joe Walcott, Occidental Club, Mechanics’ Pavilion, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Ed Graney. In a return match, this time at 135lbs, Walcott struggled to make the weight and although inside on the night he had weakened himself considerably. Setting a terrific pace Lavigne’s body blows sapped Walcott’s strength and in the ninth round he suffered muscular cramps. Wishing to organise a draw at the end of the 11th, having been refused Walcott came out for the 12th before retiring himself at the end of the session. Following his victory, Lavigne had a fair claim to the welter title as well as holding on to his lightweight laurels.
