1897-10-29 (140/145lbs) Kid Lavigne w rtd 12 (20) Joe Walcott, Occidental Club, Mechanics’ Pavilion, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Ed Graney. Despite this one being a billed lightweight championship fight at 135lbs, Walcott's Californian title claims at 140, 142 and 145lbs passed to Lavigne on the result. Setting a terrific pace Lavigne’s body blows sapped Walcott’s strength and in the ninth round he suffered muscular cramps. Wishing to organise a draw at the end of the 11th, having been refused Walcott came out for the 12th before retiring himself at the end of the session. Although Walcott was inside 135lbs on the night he had weakened himself considerably, hence the disappointing performance.
