1897-11-08 (118lbs) Will Curley w pts 20 Patsy Haley, Standard Theatre, Gateshead, England. Referee: Edward Humphreys. Billed for the world 118lbs title, Curley (116½) was soon clear of the American, who showed his disappointment when unsuccessfully trying to claim a foul after being dropped to his knees by an elbow in the ninth. Round 13 saw the pace slacken somewhat as both men tired, but it did not stop Curley adding to his lead to win by a substantial margin. Following the contest, reported by the Sporting Life to have been one of the greatest seen in the north, Curley challenged all comers at 117lbs, give or take a pound. Meanwhile, Willie Smith was still claiming the English 118lbs title and was joined by Ben Jordan on 24 December.
