1897-11-18 Tom Sharkey w rsc 6 (20) Joe Goddard, Mechanics’ Pavilion, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Bob McArthur. Having dropped Goddard twice in the opening two rounds, Sharkey resorted to rushing his man in the next three sessions with very little happening. In the sixth, Sharkey continued to bore in and after sending Goddard down with a right to the head proceeded to fall on him with great force. Although Goddard beat the count he was in no condition to continue and the referee stopped the fight. Sharkey stated afterwards that he would be challenging Fitzsimmons again and if after a reasonable time the champion had failed to accept his offer he would continue to claim the title.
