Line 1: Line 1:
1898-01-17 (122lbs) Darkey Wallace w pts 10 Willie Smith, Excelsior Baths, Bethnal Green, London, England. Referee: J. T. Hulls. Again, this was not an English championship fight but it safeguarded Wallace’s claim at 122lbs before he moved up in weight a short while later. Wallace made a solid start when putting Smith down in the first from a left to the body, and followed that up when having the latter on the floor twice more in the second. It was only a mistake by the timekeeper that allowed Smith to stay in the fight as he should have been counted out. Continuing to dominate Smith, who was floored again in the fifth, Wallace racked up the points to run out a worthy winner
