1898-01-29 Frank Childs w rtd 2 (6) Bob Armstrong, Athletic Association Gym, Chicago, Illinois, USA. Referee: George Siler. Only a six rounder, but the ‘black’ title changed hands on the result after Armstrong gave up in the second round. Having dropped Armstrong in the first, Childs tore into his rival in the second and put him down again with a right to the jaw. Getting up at ‘nine’ Armstrong was soon under attack and after being badly hurt he fell down, signalling that he did not wish to continue. According to Nelson Innes’ Record Book, Childs then supposedly risked his ‘black’ title claim in a Chicago six rounder against Klondike Haines (w disq 3 on 26 February), but I have yet to find a report of this contest taking place. On 4 June at Tattersall’s, Chicago, Frank Childs put his ‘black’ title claim at risk against Charley Strong over six rounds before the contest ended in a draw.
