1898-01-31 (104lbs) Mike Small w co 3 (20) Ernie Brady, Standard Theatre, Gateshead, England. Referee: Ed Plummer. Billed for the English 104lbs title, there was plenty of solid hitting in the opening two rounds by both men before Small (102) took advantage of an opening in the third to drop Brady (102) following solid blows to the head. Although Brady made it to his feet he was now under attack and all at sea, and taking full advantage of the situation Small had his rival over twice more before forcing a count out on the 1.25 mark. The finishing punches were crushing body shots that sent Brady flat on his face, but despite twice raising himself he was unable to stand up in time when falling back on the canvas.
