1898-02-28 (118lbs) Will Curley w co 12 (20) Torpedo Billy Murphy, Ginnett’s Circus, Newcastle, England. Referee: Edward Humphreys. Billed for the world 118lbs title, Curley (116) began the contest as he meant to carry on when a stinginging right to the jaw sent Murphy (115½) to the boards in the opening session. Continuing to punch with great force and authority, Curley had Murphy down twice more in the second and bleeding freely at the end of the third. While Murphy came back to share several sessions, Curley was merely biding his time and in the 12th, following a tremendous right to the point, the New Zealander crashed down to be counted out.
