1898-03-04 (118lbs) Dave Sullivan w rsc 9 (20) Patsy Broderick, Waverley AC, Yonkers, New York, USA. Referee: Frank Abrahall. Billed for the American 118lbs title with both men dead on the weight, the fight saw plenty of action before Sullivan took over in the eighth after playing on Broderick’s body. Going back to his corner in a groggy fashion things did not get any easier in the ninth, and following a series of jabs and swings to the head Broderick was almost out when the Police Captain in attendance jumped into the ring and the fight was awarded to Sullivan.
On 16 May, Sullivan outpointed Sammy Kelly over 20 rounds at the Lenox AC, Manhattan, NYC, New York, in a match refereed by Jimmy Dime and billed as a defence of his American 118lbs title. Unfortunately, Sullivan came to the ring weighing 122lbs while Kelly, despite losing, scaled inside 118lbs and took over the former’s claim by forfeit.
