1898-03-17 (137lbs) Kid Lavigne drew 20 Wilmington Jack Daly, Central Armory, Cleveland, Ohio, USA. Referee: Kid McCoy. Billed for the world 137lbs lightweight title, Daly (135), who scored a knockdown in the fourth round and looked to have won clearly, claimed the world title at that weight on 25 June by default after Lavigne (133½) failed to sign for a return bout. The contest had seen both men landing viciously throughout, but Daly was up for it and showed no sign of backing down.
A few weeks later, on 11 April, Daly took on Lavigne again, this time in a six-round no-decision bout at The Arena AC, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, winning the press decision handily. Thought to have been below 135lbs, Daly continued with his claim at the weight.
