1898-03-28 (126lbs) Darkey Wallace w co 20 (20) Tom Ireland, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: George Vize. While not billed as a 126lbs title bout it was considered to have involved Ireland’s claim at the weight. For several rounds it was almost punch for punch, first one then the other having some success, and at times it was a continuous slog with both going down together in the eighth. In the 11th Ireland (125) twice dropped down to avoid punishment, and in the 12th he was knocked down and lucky not to be counted out as Wallace (124) went on the rampage. From there on through the 19th Ireland came right back, but having been dazed at the end of the session he was sent down twice in the 20th and counted out with just 20 seconds left on the clock. The Sporting Life claimed that had Ireland not acted stupidly in the final round he would have been returned the winner. Despite the win, Wallace was unable to strengthen his claim.
