1898-04-04 (104lbs) Charlie Exall w disq 17 (20) Harry Brodigan, Standard Theatre, Gateshead, England. Referee: T. W. Gale. Billed for the English 104lbs title, it was fairly even for the opening four rounds before Exall (100) took the initiative to have Brodigan (102½) unsteady on his pins in the fifth. Thereafter, it was all Exall as Brodigan continually fell down when hurt or simply to avoid the punishment being meted out by his rival. Finally, in the 17th, the referee had seen enough and disqualified Brodigan, while later apologising to Exall’s corner for allowing the fight to continue for so long without taking any action.
