1898-04-11 (158/160lbs) George Chrisp w co 8 (20) Jim Richardson, Standard Theatre, Gateshead, England. Referee: Ed Plummer. Advertised in some quarters as being for both the English 158 and 160lbs titles it was give and take all the way, Richardson (158) having the better of the contest between the third and sixth rounds before Chrisp came again. Although Chrisp had been groggy on several occasions he kept at it despite receiving severe punishment at times, and in the seventh he matched Richardson blow for blow. In the eighth it was Richardson’s turn to go weak following several cracks on the jaw, a left half-arm punch eventually sending him to the floor. On getting up in a dazed state, with Richardson at the mercy of Chrisp he was immediately knocked down again, this time for the full count. The Mirror of Life reported that it was the best contest ever seen in Gateshead, there not being a single foul blow or clinch all night.
