1898-04-14 (148lbs) Mysterious Billy Smith drew 25 Joe Walcott, Park City Theatre, Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA. Referee: Sam Austin. With the Boston Post reporting it to be a catchweight contest with neither man to exceed 148lbs, the result proved nothing other than both were now claiming the title at the weight. The first ten rounds belonged to Smith, who led throughout and showed up well on the inside, while Walcott merely contented himself waiting for the Mysterious one to blow up. From the 11th onwards, Walcott evened it up with heavy body blows hurting Smith and although the latter came again he was unable to change the course of the fight.
