1898-04-25 (138lbs) Johnny Hughes w pts 20 Jim Curran, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Billed for the English 138lbs title, Hughes (135¾) appeared to have the upper hand from the beginning, and after forcing the pace in the sixth he had Curran (136) on the floor from a cracking left hand to the head. For several sessions Hughes, maintaining his pressure, rattled Curran around the ring before having the latter down again following a dust-up in the 18th. In the last three rounds it was Curran who looked the stronger, but it was Hughes who cleverly avoided any mishaps to romp home.

Announced as the 138lbs champion, Hughes, who also claimed the English 136lbs title on his victory, was out of action for a year after catching rheumatic fever.
