1898-04-25 (138lbs) Johnny Hughes w pts 20 Jim Curran, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J.Angle. Billed for the English 138lbs title, Hughes (135¾) appeared to have the upper hand from the beginning and forcing the pace in the sixth he had Curran (136) down from a cracking left hand to the head. For several sessions Hughes, maintaining his pressure, rattled Curran around the ring and in the 18th he had the latter down again following a dust-up. In the last three rounds it was Curran who looked the stronger, but it was Hughes who cleverly avoided any mishaps to romp home. Hughes, who was announced as the champion and who also claimed the English 136lbs title on his victory, was out of action for a year after catching rheumatic fever.
