1898-05-17 (136lbs) Arthur Callan w disq 7 (20) Joe Francis, Brock Street Hall, Bath, England. Made at 136lbs, it was clear from the start that Callan had too much in his armoury for Francis and was always the one leading off first, while the latter did far too much holding on. Initially it was relatively even but by the fifth Francis was being hissed for running and in the seventh Callan really got on top, belting in lefts and rights to the head. When this persisted, Francis rushed into a clinch before throwing Callan down and when the latter got up and continued to batter him he was thrown down again. This could not continue as it was and after Francis twice went to the floor without being hit he was disqualified. While there was no championship billing attached (monetary rewards hardly being substantial), Callan held his claim at the weight. On 17 April 1900, Callan again beat Francis at 136lbs, this time in Manchester, but his claim by then was non-existent.
