1898-05-23 (134lbs) Wilmington Jack Daly w disq 15 (25) Kid McPartland, Lenox AC, NYC, Manhattan, New York, USA. Referee: Charlie White. Made at 134lbs, with both men inside, Daly successfully defended both his 135 and 137lbs claims when McPartland was disqualified for holding and hitting after being cautioned several times.

Although Daly lost the return match against McPartland (l pts 25 at the Greater New York AC, Brooklyn, NYC on 29 August), both men were over 140lbs. It is also unclear whether his wins over Owen Ziegler (w pts 25 at the Greater New York AC on 10 October) and Jim Curran (w pts 20 at the Empire AC, Syracuse, New York on 17 October) had any bearing on his title aspirations at either 135 or 137lbs.
