1898-06-13 (154lbs) Tommy Ryan w rsc 14 (20) Tommy West, Lenox AC, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: Charlie White. The Articles of Agreement specifically called for a catchweight contest with neither man to exceed 154lbs and with both inside it has to be recognised as being a defence of Ryan’s title claim. West (152) gave a remarkable exhibition of courage when standing up to Ryan (146) and taking a terrible beating for almost 14 rounds. Recognising that West was right at home on the inside, Ryan stuck to boxing at range and gradually cut his man up, going from head to body as he looked for any weakness. In the earlier rounds West was always a danger, but by the 12th he was fighting on instinct alone, having been smashed to the floor by a heavy right to the head. It was now just a matter of time and with a minute to go in the 14th the referee called the fight off with Ryan virtually hitting West at will and looking for a certain knockout.
