1898-06-27 (106lbs) Bob Bailey w rsc 4 (20) Jack Hare, Excelsior School of Arms, Sheffield, England. Referee: Tommy Garside. Made at 106lbs, despite a lack of billing it was always thought to have involved the English title but the fact that it was contested over two-minute rounds virtually disqualified it as such and Bailey’s claim went nowhere. The fight itself saw Bailey flooring Hare early in the first round before it became a scrambling affair that led to the referee entering the ring in the third in order to separate the pair. Badly outclassed, Hare was dropped twice more in the fourth and was out on his feet when the referee came to his rescue.
Meanwhile, Matt Precious (having outpointed Kid Veitch over eight rounds to win an English championship belt competition at the Gymnastic Club, Stalybridge on 21 September 1899) was also claiming the title.
