1898-07-29 (148lbs) Mysterious Billy Smith w pts 25 George Green, Lenox AC, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: Charlie White. Regarded as a title fight by the 1985 Ring Record Book, Smith (147) was stronger and better than Green (146) throughout, outfighting and outboxing his man in virtually every round. Working well to the body, Smith pounded Green whenever he got to close quarters and although the latter stood up manfully there was only one winner. There were no knockdowns. Despite successfully defending his 148lbs claim Smith would not be generally recognised until he defeated Matty Matthews at 142lbs.
