With the New York Herald reporting that both men were inside the agreed 142lbs, Smith, whose foul tactics were more than noticeable, made a good start and was the aggressor throughout. At the end of the 14th Matthews claimed that he had been hit low, but after the referee ignored him he used sprint tactics to keep his distance.
